American Cultural History 1930-1939
By the 1930s money was scarce because of the
depression, so people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies
were hot, parlor games and board games were popular. People gathered around
radios to listen to the Yankees. Young people danced to the big bands. Franklin
Roosevelt influenced Americans with his Fireside Chats. The golden age of
the mystery novel continued as people escaped into books, reading writers
like Agatha Christie, Dashielle Hammett, and Raymond Chandler.
What Caused the Great Depression of the 1930s?
The Great Depression of the 1930s was the economic event of the 20th century. The history of the depression is fascinating because it is a reference point for economic misery and fear. When people make financial planning decisions and politicians set policy the depression experience is, or maybe should be, in the back of everyone's mind as a worst case scenario.

Russia: Transformation and Terror
The gradual accession of Stalin to power in the
1920s eventually brought an end to the liberalization of society and the economy,
leading instead to a period of unprecedented government control, mobilization,
and terrorization of society in Russia and the other Soviet republics. In
the 1930s, agriculture and industry underwent brutal forced centralization,
and Russian cultural activity was highly restricted. Purges eliminated thousands
of individuals deemed dangerous to the Soviet state by Stalin's operatives
